Headaches and Migraines
Frequent headaches and migraines can be symptoms of temporo mandibular joint syndrome (TMJ Syndrome).
The headaches are often severe and are usually resistant to pain killers.
TMJ syndrome can be very hard to diagnose as there are so many symptoms that can occur. Doctors aren’t equipped to diagnose TMJ syndrome which often ends up in misdiagnosis. This condition is poorly understood at the present time but there are many theories about the causes of this disorder.
Research has found that this disorder is more prone to people who grind their teeth while asleep at night. People who have had trauma on the jaw, osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis are also more at risk to develop TMJ syndrome.
If you constantly experience headache or migraines along with clenching of the jaw, which causes muscle spasms in the temples, this may already be a sign that you have TMJ syndrome.
You may also want to watch out for other symptoms associated with TMJ syndrome, such as pain or tenderness of the jaw and around the ear, clicking sound when the jaw is opened or closed, difficulty chewing, spasms which cause your jaw to lock and uneven bite.
Diagnosing TMJ syndrome will involve the history of how you sleep, your teeth grinding habits during the day and general tension. At Glebe Dental Group, we are equipped to diagnose you if you have TMJ syndrome as it is one of our practice specialties.
To assist in diagnosis, we have the latest equipment to recognise TMJ syndrome. As a treatment, we offer dental appliances which correct the alignment of the jaw, which is the main cause of TMJ syndrome.
